Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics SAC
Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics (H&I) is the study of matching donor organs, cells and tissue for transplantation e.g., kidney, heart, islets and bone marrow transplantation. H&I scientists make sure that the transplanted organs and cells are suitable for the recipient, to lessen the chances of the transplant being rejected. H&I scientists also analyse the specific genes that are involved in certain diseases e.g., Coeliac Disease and HLA-DQ genes.
