  • Chair - Professor Mike Osborn

    President of The Royal College of Pathologists

    Professor Osborn studied medicine at Guy’s & St Thomas’ Hospitals, London, qualifying in 1995. He became a member of the Royal College of Surgeons in 2000 and a fellow of the Royal College of Pathologists in 2004. Professor Osborn currently works as a consultant histopathologist for North West London Pathology at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust, London, where he is clinical lead. His working time is divided between post mortems, diagnostic gastrointestinal histopathology, bowel cancer screening and teaching. He runs an intercalated BSc in Humanities, Philosophy & Law at Imperial College, London.

    During the COVID-19 pandemic, Professor Osborn and colleagues at Imperial College published work relating to findings in fatal COVID-19 infection. He was elected President of the Royal College of Pathologists in November 2020, having previously been a member of Council and holding a variety of College roles, including Chair of the Cellular Pathology Specialty Advisory Committee and Death Investigation Committee.

  • Keynote speaker - Professor Virginia Murray

    Head of Global Disaster Risk Reduction for the UK Health and Security Agency Centre for Climate and Health Security - UK

    Professor Virginia Murray is a public health doctor committed to improving health emergency and disaster risk management. She was appointed as Head of Global Disaster Risk Reduction for UK Health Security Agency (formerly Public Health England) in April 2014. She is a member of the Integrated Research on Disaster Risk (IRDR) scientific committee and co-chair of IRDR’s Disaster Loss Data (DATA) and is currently the Chair of the UNDRR/ISC Hazard Classification and Review Technical Working Group, with the report published in 2020 and the UNDRR-ISC Hazard Information Profiles: Supplement in 2021. She is a member of CODATA Executive Committee. She is a co-chair of the WHO Thematic Platform Health and Disaster Risk Management Research Network, and by working in collaboration with this network, she is one of the editors of the WHO Guidance on Research Methods for Health and Disaster Risk Management, published in October 2021 and updated in 2022.  She is a visiting/honorary Professor and fellow at several universities.

  • Speaker - Dr Jorge Abarca

    Consultant in Infectious Diseases, Head Of Infectious Diseases Division, Sultan Qaboos Comprehensive Cancer Centre – Oman DR JORGE ABARCA

    Dr. Jorge Abarca, a distinguished expert in Infectious Diseases and Microbiology, trained at ITESM/University of Valencia and Complutense University in Madrid. Since 2021, he serves as Head of Infectious Diseases at SQCCCRC, leading inpatient and outpatient infection diagnosis and antimicrobial stewardship. He collaborates with various departments, including Microbiology and Infection Prevention and Control. With over two decades of global experience, Dr. Abarca also teaches at prestigious institutions and is a proud member of prominent medical societies.

  • Speaker- Ms Sheri Scott

    Senior Lecturer and Clinical Lab Sustainability Consultant, Nottingham Trent University

    Sheri joined Nottingham Trent University in 2018 after a career covering 22 years working in Clinical Biochemistry in NHS laboratories. She advocates for greener practice, both for her university, the NHS and internationally. Sheri is a core member of the EFLM green and sustainable labs taskforce and the IBMS sustainability lead. Sheri is a Green Gowns finalist for her commitment and contribution to Clinical Laboratory Sustainability.

  • Speaker - Dr Sudha Ranganathan

    Consultant and Head of Transfusion Medicine, Apollo Hospital Hyderabad, India

    Sudha Ranganathan, has been working in the field of Blood transfusion services in India for over two decades .She has worked at the Tata Memorial Hospital ,Mumbai, India,as senior resident and was responsible for Transfusion services for cancer patients admitted to the hospital.She as a wide experience in Haemopoietic stem cell collections for autologous and allogenic transplants in close coordination with clinical Haematology .She is presently working as a Senior consultant and Head of Blood transfusion services at the Apollo hospital and health city ,Hyderabad ,India and is responsible for transfusion services at the hospital .The hospital has an active organ transplant programme including Liver and kidney and Bone marrow transplantation.ABO incompatible organ transplants and Haploidentical BMT form part of the programme .These patients require advanced Immunohaematology work up and the transfusion service and the blood bank is responsible for these activities.

  • Roundtable panellist - Dr Claire Gordon

    Consultant in Infection, UKHSA Rare and Imported Pathogens Laboratory UK

    I am a consultant in Infectious Diseases and Clinical Microbiology working at the UK Health Security Agency. I have a keen interest in health systems strengthening, particularly in improving access to diagnostic microbiology to optimise use of antimicrobials. Prior to joining UKHSA, I worked as the lead clinical microbiologist for the UK Department of Health Fleming Fund programme, which aims to strengthen microbiology laboratories and associated health systems to improve surveillance and control of Antimicrobial Resistance in low- and middle-income countries. I am now the deputy unit head of the Rare and Imported Pathogens Laboratory, which is the UK’s frontline laboratory for diagnosis of rare, unusual and dangerous viral and bacterial pathogens, particular those imported from overseas where diagnosing the infection is particularly challenging. 

  • Roundtable panellist - Dr Shireen Kassam

    Consultant Haematologist and Honorary Senior Lecturer, King’s College Hospital, London UK

    Dr Shireen Kassam is a Consultant Haematologist and Honorary Senior Lecturer at King’s College Hospital, London with a specialist interest in the treatment of lymphoma. She is also a Visiting-Professor at University of Winchester, Hampshire, where she has developed and facilitates the UK's first University-based course on plant-based nutrition.  

    Shireen is passionate about promoting plant-based nutrition for the prevention and reversal of chronic disease and for maintaining optimal health after treatment for cancer. In 2019 she became certified as a Lifestyle Medicine Physician and is also a CHIP facilitator. 

    Shireen founded Plant-Based Health Professionals UK in 2018, a non-profit, membership organisation whose mission is to provide evidence-based education on whole food plant-based nutrition. In January 2021, she co-founded and launched the UK's first regulated, plant-based, lifestyle medicine healthcare service Plant Based Health Online. 

    Shireen qualified as a doctor in 2000. During her training, she completed a PhD, which investigated the role of selenium in sensitising cancer cells to chemotherapy. Shireen has published a number of peer-reviewed papers in the field of lymphoma. Her first book, Eating Plant-Based, Scientific Answers to Your Nutrition Questions, co-authored with her sister Zahra, was published in January 2022. She has also co-edited the textbook Plant-Based Nutrition in Clinical Practice, published in September 2022.

  • Roundtable panellist - Professor Sergei Shubin

    Professor in Human Geography, Swansea University

    Sergei Shubin is a Director of the Centre for Migration Policy Research (CMPR) at Swansea University. His research interests are in migration, poverty and inequality. He is a Committee member of the Population Geography Research Group at the Royal Geographical Society. His recent research projects include Horizon2020 study on the Impact of COVID19 on vulnerable persons (particularly migrant nurses) @COVINFORM_SU, impact of perceptions and narratives of Europe on migration @SU_PERCEPTIONS, UK government-funded research on social security of migrants in Scotland, and the studies poverty alleviation in Bangladesh and India, as well as in the Amazon (Brazil and Bolivia).
